GEOGRAPHIC  SITUATION  OF THE DISTRICT

Geographic position of the District The District of Gatsibo results from the new cutting of the country in 4 Provinces and the city of Kigali.  The current District of situated Gatsibo in Province of the East is delimited to the East by the National Park of the Akagera; to the North by the District of Nyagatare; to the West by the District of Gicumbi, to the South by the Districts of Rwamagana and Kayonza.  His area is of 1585, 3 Km2. 

It is constituted by the merger of the former District of Humure and Murambi, of 7 sectors of the former District of Ngarama, of 4 sectors of the former District of Kahi, of 3 sectors of the former District of Rebero, of 2 sectors of the former District of Rwamiko and of 5 sectors of the former District of Gabiro. 

The District of Gatsibo is composed from 14 Sectors to knowledge Gasange, Gatsibo, Gitoki, Kabarore, Kageyo, Kiramuruzi, Kiziguro, Muhura, Murambi, Ngarama, Nyagihanga, Remera, Rugarama and Rwimbogo.  It understands 69 cells and 603 villages (Imidugudu). 

The Relief

The relief of the District of Gatsibo is characterized to the East by scarcely weak hills separated by valleys dry during a big period of the year.  To the West, Gatsibo has an injured relief.  The region of Gatsibo is located in a granite depression of which the average altitude is of 1550 Mr.  The District of Gatsibo spreads itself on the plateau and the savannah of the East of the country.  The topography of the zone is not largely mountainous and constitutes a potentiality for the introduction of the agricultural mechanization.  The agricultural development of the District on the part Is will necessitate well heard fitting installations for the protection of the grounds.  This relief offers to Gatsibo a vocation agro pastoral and tourist. 

Climate

The District of Gatsibo is characterized by two principal seasons: a long dry season of which the annual average temperature varies between {PN20,3° CPN} and 21,7° C.  The rain season is short and influences negatively hydraulic availability for the activities agro-sylvo one-pastoral.  The center forecast of Kiramuruzi a trump of followed by the microphone climate of the region. 

Hydrography

The District of known Gatsibo of the weak rains and high temperatures.  That limit the availability of water.  In fact, to party the river Umuvumba and Akagera as well as the lake Muhazi, there is not any

other river pérenne exploitable by the inhabitants of Gatsibo.  Gatsibo disposes also rivers marécageuses and intermittent between them.  They are Kanyonyomba, Rwangingo, Kabahanga, Kagina, Kagende, Rwagitima and Ntende.  This hydrographic network combined with the aforementioned relief offers timeliness of irrigation. 

Grounds

The District is characterized by an abundance of the grounds ferralisols humifères on originating latérite of the deterioration of the shales and phyllades, accumulation of the collisions in the valleys dry.  The grounds of granite origin have a texture with a little red clay especially in the South – Oust of the District.  The termitières are met in the biggest party of the District. 

The combined action of the lithosphere (rock mother granite), atmosphere (rains), biosphere (man and the other living beings) developed deep grounds but of which the fertility by the drought of the more stressed climate by drying out winds blowing East.  Thus the xérokaolisols in the party Are remains the ground type the more dominating.  To the surface, they identify themselves by the narrowness of the layer humifère brought by the grassy savannah. 

The grounds of Gatsibo contain ores as the cassitérite, the colombo-tantalite, the wolfram, etc.  They contain also materials of construction as the gravel, the sand, the moellons, clay, etc. 

The Flora and the Wildlife

The flora

 The flora of the District of Gatsibo is characterized by a vegetation of kind steppe wooded.  Its hills are covered with short grasses as well as small trees.  Concerning afforestation, the District of Gatsibo has access to Eucalyptus and of Pinus that generally are afforestations étatiques.  One there meets also types agro forest with predominant coffee in the region North – West of the District. 

 The wildlife

As for the wildlife, the District of Gatsibo has access to an inheritance of the former domain of hunt of  Akagera national park with diversified birds notably the rapacious ones as the éperviers, the hiboux, the sparrows, the pintades, the partridges, the heroes, the ibis, the crows, the prick beef, etc.  The hares, the wild boars, the monkeys and other rodents live the hills where exist again small natural shrubs.  The hippopotames are met in the river Umuvumba and in the lake Muhazi.  The crocodiles exist also in certain valleys ladies as to Rwimbogo.  The antelopes, the buffalo and ruminating other screws in the party occupied by the Akagera National Park.
